In 2020 our rhythms have been off! This year has undoubtedly been rough. All of humanity has been disrupted in the most extraordinary ways. We have experienced devastation and disruption resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. We have also continued to be afflicted by crimes and injustices perpetrated against people of African descent—ills against humanity. Other systematically marginalized and disenfranchised groups have continued to be exploited. The prioritization of profit over the needs of people by systems yielding power have been exacerbated. These, and many other tragic events have defined 2020 for so many of us.
Nonetheless, I’m encouraged. As we prepare to enter into a new beginning, by ushering in 2021, we hold on to hope. We trust that our labor, and the labor of our ancestors, has not been in vain. We believe that through all of the madness there will be a brighter tomorrow. Let us continue to lift one another up, love each other, and care unconditionally for our fellow human beings. We are one.
In the holiday tradition of Kwanzaa we honor the principle of Kuumba (Creativity) on the 31st day of December. If 2020 has taught us anything it is the importance of creativity. People have innovated in the most incredible ways to keep us all uplifted, and more importantly, connected. We are grateful for all of the creators. As we move into the new year I encourage you to exercise your creativity. Imagine a better world. Create a better world. If we are doing our part I have no doubt that in 2021everything is going to be alright .
